Huawei Mate X 5G At CES 2020: Hands On With A Great Foldable Phone!

I was able to get hands on the Huawei Mate X 5G at CES 2020 and was very impressed on the build quality of the phone! This is one solid foldable phone that actually is better fit then the current Samsung Galaxy Fold. Huawei finally released the Mate X 5G in China, though you can’t purchase it the US but hoping to see this phone come to the US very soon. In the very short time I was able to check out the Mate X 5G at CES 2020 it was very responsive, fluid and very nice to hold and use in your hand. In the video you will see a quick overview of the Huawei Mate X 5G but the videos you see of the phone really doesn’t show how well it is design and built.

One of the advantage of the Huawei Mate X 5G is that when the phone is folded, you get a full phone 6.6-inch display. This is pretty much on par with a regular current phone. The display is great, touch was very responsive, you do feel the screen sort of a thin material when touching and scrolling around but in no way it was where it would be an issue. These foldable phones use a plastic like material and is a bit more delicate then your current glass display phones. Only time will tell if having the display on the outside will be more subject to getting scratch easier. Samsung has put the display on the inside of the Galaxy Fold and the front display though very small in comparison to the Huawei Mate X 5G, it is glass so it doesn’t scratch as easy.

Using the Huawei Mate X 5G as a tablet, currently has the best overall feel as you get a full 8-inch display that makes a better experience using it as a tablet. Huawei made a good choice by keeping the cameras on the reverse side, this gives you a full display without any cutouts, hole punch, etc.. for your viewing display. Currently this will be the best pocketable foldable phone with a big display when using as a tablet.

The Huawei Mate X 5G comes with some high end specs as well. It is running the HiSilicon Kirin 980 (7 nm) with the Octa-core (2x2.6 GHz Cortex-A76 & 2x1.92 GHz Cortex-A76 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A55) and for the GPU it has the Mali-G76 MP10 to give you smooth gaming and great web browsing with graphics that won’t be slow on the device. You can also upgrade the storage NM (Nano Memory), up to 256GB (uses shared SIM slot) and has 512GB of internal storage with 8GB RAM.

In the short time testing out the camera it seemed to take really good pictures. They had good detail on them, though the lighting at CES wasn’t the best. Taking pictures with the zoom feature of the phone, those seemed to be really clear and acceptable for the lighting conditions and how good it was able to zoom in and capture your subject! The Huawei Mate X 5G comes with a 40 MP, f/1.8, 27mm (wide), 1/1.7", PDAF, 8 MP, f/2.4, 52mm (telephoto), 16 MP, f/2.2, 17mm (ultrawide) and has TOF 3D, (depth) cameras. With the Leica optics you can do video capture at 2160p@30fps, 1080p@30fps as well.

Huawei Mate X 5G and Samsung Galaxy Fold

You can see that the Huawei Mate X 5G on the left gives you the more viewable display in tablet mode, vs the Samsung Galaxy Fold which still has a good amount of screen display in tablet mode. In my using at the show floor, the Huawei Mate X 5G would be the best as a 8-inch tablet and still small enough when folded in your pocket. The Mate X 5G Unfolded is: 161.3 x 146.2 x 5.4 mm, Folded: 161.3 x 78.3 x 11 mm and also has a Foldable OLED capacitive touchscreen, with 16M colors. You get 2200 x 2480 pixels (~414 ppi density) and Folded cover display: 6.6", AMOLED, 1148 x 2480 pixels (19.5:9).
